News | Greater Sydney has a bright future ahead of it, but what can we do to achieve quality outcomes that create great places across our three cities?

To answer this question, and identify other key urban design and place-making challenges and opportunities, the Greater Sydney Commission and the Government Architect NSW recently enlisted some bright minds from across the three cities for a Community Challenge.

The event brought together students, architects, community groups, council staff, designers, landscapers, developers and more, to share their expertise and experience with over 100 people attending the event. In addition to a room buzzing with creative energy, the online conversation was also robust; our hashtag, #greatersydneyplaces was the number 1 topic in Sydney on Twitter (twice!) and we achieved over 264,000 views on social media.

Participants listened to the NSW Government Architect, Infrastructure NSW, PLAN International, HASSEL Studio and Stockland present thought-provoking ideas on place-based planning and working together to create great places and then enthusiastically deliberated and brainstormed potential ideas, relevant to the distinct urban landscapes across the three cities. The groups then fine-tuned their proposed solutions and identified the roles the community, government and private sector would need to play to turn ideas into reality.

From here, the Commission will produce a report about the challenges and ideas identified during the event and the Government Architect’s Office will use the findings to inform their upcoming Urban Design Guide for Metropolitan Sydney.
