Geoff, who also serves as Chief Coordinator of the Western City and is a board member of the Western City & Aerotropolis Authority, has been recognised for significant service to urban planning and development.
He was appointed to the Commission in December 2015 and has played a key leadership and execution role in its work to deliver the new Greater Sydney Region Plan, A Metropolis of Three Cities, the five District Plans and the 24 priorities agreed between Government and the Chief Commissioner.
Geoff also was instrumental in negotiating the Western Sydney City Deal, signed by three levels of Government in March 2018, which is delivering billions of dollars of investment into Western Sydney to build transport and social infrastructure, grow jobs and create the Western Sydney Parkland City.
Chief Commissioner, Lucy Turnbull AO, said "Geoff believes passionately that cities are about people; that the planning of cities has the power to change people's lives; and that in Greater Sydney, we have an opportunity and a responsibility to use urban planning to transform the lives of people living in Western Sydney now and into the future.
"I believe Geoff to be a professional of the highest calibre, one who has delivered multiple significant projects and policies over 35 years, with many of these, such as the Western Sydney City Deal, being game changers that will enhance the lives of many thousands of people now and into the future," Ms Turnbull said.
The Order of Australia is Geoff's second award in recent weeks. In May 2019, Geoff was awarded National Planner of the Year by the Planning Institute of Australia.
The PIA judges stated, in part: "Geoff Roberts has been a champion for planning for many years in his professional life, in academia, and in recent times, in his important role with the Greater Sydney Commission."
