Assurance of local strategic planning

Working with councils to deliver quality outcomes for communities

The making of Local Strategic Planning Statements (LSPSs) by councils in Greater Sydney marks a milestone in the delivery of planning reforms that place greater emphasis on upfront strategic planning.

At present, the focus of councils is the development of a Local Strategic Planning Statement (LSPS) which sets out the 20-year vision for a local government area, demonstrates how change will be managed and identifies local priorities for updating council LEPs. A guide to preparing the LSPS is on the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment website.

The Commission is currently undertaking a new assurance program that ensures the work of the councils is aligned with the Region and District Plans. Through the assurance process a council is able to seek a Letter of Support which enables an LSPS to be made.
