Six Cities Region Discussion Paper

As a foundation for engagement, our  Six Cities Region Discussion Paper is the first step in planning at the city region scale. It outlines initial thoughts on how we can work with communities and partners to shape the Six Cities Region.

This Discussion Paper is the starting point for conversations with stakeholders: First Nations Peoples, community members, local councils, industry, state government departments and agencies, and cities experts.

Through extensive engagement, we will ensure that government, industry and community priorities inform our strategic planning and are reflected in the Region Plan and City Plans.

Find out how we work closely to align and implement our strategic planning with the Department of Planning and Environment.

Current City Plans

Regional Plans developed by the Department of Planning and Environment will apply as City Plans until the Commission makes its new city plans in 2024.

Six Cities Region explained

The Six Cities Region is Australia’s first global-city region. It is a network of six connected cities in Australia that lift each other up, while celebrating and leveraging each city’s unique character and strengths.

The Six Cities Region comprises the Lower Hunter and Greater Newcastle City, Central Coast City, Illawarra-Shoalhaven City, Western Parkland City, Central River City and Eastern Harbour City. It is based on local government boundaries and feedback from local stakeholders.
